Attorney Patrick T. Barone began defending clients accused of drunk driving in 1992. He is the founding member of the Barone Defense Firm, which specializes in defending drunk-driving cases throughout the State of Michigan.
Attorney Barone received his Bachelor’s of Science in Biology from Oakland University in 1987. He went on to receive his Juris Doctor from the Detroit College of Law at Michigan State University in 1991. While in law school, Attorney Barone held a full-time position as a clerk with the Honorable Richard D. Kuhn of the Oakland County Circuit Court. He also held an internship with Honorable John N. O’Brien during his summer term.
In 1991, Attorney Barone successfully completed the bar examination and became a member of the Michigan Bar Association. He was admitted to the Illinois Bar Association the following year. Today, Attorney Barone is a member of many professional memberships, including: Association of Trial Lawyers of America, the Michigan State Bar Association’s Criminal Law Section, and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He was also unanimously nominated to the position of sustaining member for the National College for DUI Defense, the preeminent organization for DUI lawyers.
Understanding the chemical test or field sobriety test is critical for any successful defense lawyer. Attorney Barone has been certified as a Standardized Field Sobriety Test instructor and practitioner by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP). He also attended a certification course at the National Patent Corporation, which manufactures the DataMaster breath test machine. He has been trained on how to perform calibration checks and essential diagnostic verifications on the BAC DataMaster.

Attorney Barone has authored numerous articles on the topic of DUI defense. He is currently the executive editor of The DWI Journal, Law & Science. This is a nationally circulated periodical that is dedicated to making DUI defense attorneys more successful in the defense of their clients.
Attorney Barone wrote the 2006 supplement for Defending Drinking Drivers, a treatise that offers expert advice to lawyers who defend drinking drivers. This publication, first authored by John A. Tarantino, covers the legal aspect of the case as well as the scientific aspect regarding the science of alcohol as well as chemical testing. As the current co-author of this two volume treatise, he ensures that the information is kept up-to-date and is on the cutting edge of DUI law.
Attorney Barone also co-authored The DUI Book (Michigan Edition) with Attorney William C. Head. This book was written for the layperson accused of driving under the influence and includes a wealth of information and answers regarding drunk-driving cases.
Attorney Barone is currently an Adjunct Professor at Thomas M. Cooley Law School where he teaches a course entitled “Drunk Driving Law and Practice.” This is the first law school course of its kind entirely devoted to drunk-driving law. Combing criminal law and forensic science, Attorney Barone’s trailblazing course covers topics such as chemical testing, field sobriety testing, and alcohol metabolism.
Because of his experience and reputation, Attorney Barone is highly regarded by the news media as subject matter expert on the topic of DUI law. He is also regularly invited to provide lectures on the subject of DUI defense.
